OSRS Ironman Fishing 1-99: Barbarian Fishing & Karambwan Strategy
Quest to 27 (Sea Slug, Fishing Contest). Fly fish to 58 (AFK food). Barbarian fish 58-70 to gain 73 Agility for free. Switch to Karambwan at 65 (18 HP food, ultra-AFK with barrel). Get barrel from Tempoross (1/400 rate). Total: 50-80 hours depending on route.
Fishing on an ironman is about resource efficiency. You need food for PvM. You need Agility levels. You need training methods that don’t waste clicks.
At a glance:
- Quest speedrun (1-27): 30 minutes, zero XP grind
- Early AFK (27-58): Fly fishing for trout/salmon, collects food
- Mid game (58-70): Barbarian fishing gains 73 Agility XP as bonus
- Late game (65+): Karambwan fishing - the meta (AFK + food + decent XP)
- Key unlock: Fishing Barrel (Tempoross drop) = 3-5 min AFK vs 1.5 min
- Endgame: Sacred eels for Zulrah scales + Anglerfish for overheal raids
Early Game: Quest Speedrun (Level 1-27)
Don’t grind early fishing. Use quests.
| Quest | XP | Level After |
|---|---|---|
| Sea Slug | 7,175 | 24 |
| Fishing Contest | 2,437 | 26 |
| RfD (Pirate Pete) | ~1,000 | 27 |
| Total | ~10,612 | 27 |
Early-Mid Game: Fly Fishing (Level 27-58)
Basic Fly Fishing
- Levels: 27-58
- Location: Southeast of Prifddinas gate (bank nearby)
- Equipment: Fly fishing rod + feathers (~5,000 needed total)
- XP Rates: 30,000-42,000 XP/hour depending on level
- AFK Duration: 2-4 minutes per session
- Food Output: Trout (20 HP), Salmon (40 HP) - useful cooking materials (see Food Guide for usage)
Why this stage:
- Pure AFK - drop feathers, click fishing spot, do something else
- Collects tradeable food for later
- No quest requirements or unlocks needed
Mid Game: Barbarian Fishing (Level 58-70+)
Barbarian Fishing is the most efficient path to 99 because of Agility XP gains, not raw fishing XP.
The Math on Agility XP
At Level 58 Barbarian Fishing:
- Fishing XP: 37,000 XP/hour
- Agility XP: 3,400 XP/hour (gained simultaneously)
- Strength XP: 3,400 XP/hour (bonus)
To 99 Fishing (58-99): ~40-50 hours of Barbarian Fishing gives you:
- 99 Fishing ✓
- 73 Agility levels gained for free (from 1 → 73+)
- 73 Strength levels gained (bonus)
This is the equivalent of skipping Agility entirely. Normally Agility 1-73 takes 30+ hours. You get it passively.
Barbarian Fishing Setup
- Minimum Level: 15 Fishing (but start at 48+ for Leaping Sturgeon - better food)
- Location: Barbarian Village (south of Varrock)
- Equipment: Fly fishing rod + feathers
- Sturdy Boots: Required to fish Leaping Sturgeon
Optimal Progression
| Level | Food Type | XP/hr | Agility XP/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48-58 | Leaping Sturgeon | 23,000 | 2,300 |
| 58-70 | Leaping Sturgeon | 37,000 | 3,400 |
| 70-99 | Leaping Sturgeon | 57,000 | 5,200 |
When to Stop Barbarian Fishing
Optimal cutoff: Level 70-75 Agility
At this point, Agility XP becomes less valuable relative to pure Fishing XP gains. You have two options:
- Continue Barbarian to 99 → Gain 73 Agility levels total (best for Agility)
- Switch to Karambwan at 65 → Better food, more AFK, slightly less Agility XP (best for Ironman efficiency)
Tempoross & Fishing Barrel
The Fishing Barrel is the unlock that changes everything about late-game fishing.
What is Tempoross?
Tempoross is a minigame where you fight the Spirit of the Sea (scales to solo/group). It’s not about combat efficiency - it’s about the Fishing Barrel drop.
- Requirement: 35+ Fishing
- Location: Sea Spirit Dock (south of Al Kharid)
- Reward Rate: 1 in 400 attempts (brutal RNG)
Why You Need the Barrel
| Condition | AFK Duration | Inventory | Banking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Without Barrel | 1.5 min | 28 fish | Every 1.5 min |
| With Barrel | 3-5 min | Unlimited | Every 3-5 min |
The barrel eliminates inventory management. 3-5x longer AFK sessions = massively better for grinding.
Other Tempoross Rewards
- Spirit Angler’s Outfit: +2.5% Fishing XP on all fishing (permanent, highly recommended)
- Fishing Supplies: Various equipment drops
- Crates: Food and supplies crates
The Grind
Expect 200-400 games for the barrel. This is soul-crushing RNG, but it’s the only way to unlock late-game AFK.
Late Game: Karambwan Fishing (Level 65-99)
This is the meta. Karambwan fishing is self-sustaining food production while training. See Food Guide for detailed karambwan strategy.
Setup
- Level: 65 Fishing + 30 Cooking
- Quest: Tai Bwo Wannai Trio (Fishing portion only)
- Location: North of Karamja Shipyard
- Equipment: Karambwan Vessel (quest reward)
- Bait: Karambwanji (caught at fairy ring CKR)
XP Rates
| Setup | XP/hour |
|---|---|
| Base Karambwan | 35,000 |
| + Fishing Barrel | 38,000 |
| + Angler’s Outfit | 40,000 |
| + Barrel + Outfit + 99 Fishing | 46,000 |
Banking Methods
Fastest route:
- Karamja Gloves 3 teleport → Shilo Village bank
- Quest Point teleport → Fairy ring DKP
- Back to Karambwan spot
Total banking time: 2-3 minutes (efficient enough with barrel)
Why It’s Meta
- Food Output: 900 fish/hour × 18 HP healing = 16,200 HP/hour of food
- XP Rate: 35-46k is respectable for AFK
- Self-Sustaining: Catches bait (Karambwanji) while fishing
- Duration: Viable from 65 all the way to 99
- Banking: Karamja Gloves teleport is one of the fastest in the game
Alternative Methods (Monkfish, Anglerfish)
Monkfish (Level 62-99)
- Location: Piscatoris Fishing Colony
- XP Rate: 15-20k XP/hour (slow but AFK)
- Food Value: 16 HP healing (worse than Karambwan)
- Banking: Fairy ring AKQ (fast)
When to use: Pre-65 Karambwan, or if you want variation. Not recommended as primary method.
Anglerfish (Level 82-99) - Essential for Late-Game PvM
The most important late-game food for survival in raids and endgame PvM. Not about XP - it’s about overheal mechanics and endgame preparation.
Setup & Rates
- Location: Port Piscarilius (Piscarilius House, requires 100% house favor)
- Equipment: Fishing rod + sandworms (buyable at spot)
- XP Rate: 15-23k XP/hour (very slow, not the focus)
- Catch Rate: 75-150 fish/hour with sandworms
- AFK Duration: Inconsistent (4-8+ minutes between clicks)
- Banking: Deposit box nearby, convenient for inventory management
Anglerfish Healing Properties
Unlike other foods, anglerfish scales with your HP level:
| HP Level | Heals | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 80-89 | 16 HP | Mid-game (similar to monkfish) |
| 90-92 | 17 HP | Pre-99 |
| 93-99 | 22 HP | Endgame raids/bosses |
Unique Feature: Overheal
- Can heal above maximum HP up to the amount restored
- At 99 HP level: Can reach 121 total HP (21 HP overheal buffer)
- Critical for survivability: Overheal acts as a safety cushion in long raids (ToB, CoX, Inferno)
- Note: Overheal does NOT apply in PvP areas
Why Anglerfish Over Karambwan for Late-Game?
Anglerfish Strengths:
- 22 HP heal (vs karambwan’s 18 HP)
- Overheal mechanic provides survival buffer
- Better for endurance encounters (long bossing, raids)
Karambwan Strengths:
- Combo-eating: Eat shark (20 HP) + karambwan (18 HP) = 38 HP in one tick
- Better for DPS-critical content (Inferno, phase-based bosses)
Optimal Late-Game Strategy: Use both - Karambwan for DPS phases, Anglerfish for overheal buffer and recovery. Most raiders bring 70% karambwan + 30% anglerfish. See Food Guide for detailed combo-eating and raid food strategy.
Yama’s Diabolic Worms (New Drop)
Yama boss (accessed post-Kingdom Divided quest) drops Diabolic Worms which significantly boost anglerfish catch rates:
Mechanics:
- Drop rate: 7.4% from Yama
- Quantity: 90 worms per drop
- Effect: Next fishing catch occurs 50% faster
- Usage: One-time consumable per catch
Impact on Rates:
- Without worms: 75-150 fish/hour
- With worms: 300-450 fish/hour (3x improvement)
- Trade-off: XP drops from 120 → 79.2 per catch
Ironman Value: Diabolic worms are economically negative for profit, but excellent for quickly stockpiling anglerfish when you need high quantities before raiding. Can combine sandworms + diabolic worms for flexibility.
Stockpiling for Raids
Most ironmen aim for:
- Per raid tier: 50-100+ cooked anglerfish
- Before serious raiding: 1,000+ total stockpile
- Cooking requirement: 84 Cooking (use Cooking Gauntlets to reduce burn rate)
Optimal Ironman Progression
Fastest Route to 99 (Pure XP)
- Levels 1-27: Quests (30 min)
- Levels 27-58: Fly fishing (5 hours, AFK)
- Levels 58-99: Barbarian fishing (45 hours, gains 73 Agility)
- Total: 50 hours
- Bonus: 73 free Agility levels (skip Agility training entirely)
Best All-Around Route (Food + XP)
- Levels 1-27: Quests (30 min)
- Levels 27-58: Fly fishing (5 hours, AFK, collects food)
- Levels 58-70: Barbarian fishing (10 hours, gains 46 Agility)
- Levels 70-99: Karambwan fishing (40 hours, ultra-AFK with barrel, self-sustaining food)
- Total: 60 hours
- Bonus: 46 Agility levels + thousands of food for PvM
Most AFK Route (Minimal Clicks)
- Levels 1-27: Quests (30 min)
- Levels 27-62: Fly fishing + Monkfish (10 hours, pure AFK)
- Levels 62-99: Karambwan fishing with barrel (80 hours, 3-5 min AFK sessions)
- Total: 90 hours
- Bonus: Minimal attention, consistent food output
Endgame: Sacred Eels for Zulrah Scales (Level 87+)
Not the fastest fishing method, but an essential passive activity for scale generation.
Why Sacred Eels?
Late-game ironman requires scales to charge critical gear (used in endgame food strategy):
- Serpentine Helmet: 11,000 scales
- Toxic Blowpipe: 3,063,621 scales (full capacity)
- Trident of the Swamp: 1 scale per cast
- Toxic Staff of the Dead: Scales for charging
Rather than repeatedly killing Zulrah boss, sacred eels let you accumulate scales passively while training Fishing and Cooking.
Sacred Eel Fishing Setup
- Level: 87 Fishing + 72 Cooking (dissecting requirement)
- Location: Zul-Andra (south of Chasm of Fire, requires Regicide quest)
- Equipment: Fishing rod + fishing bait
- Processing: Dissect eels with knife for Zulrah scales (3-9 scales per eel)
Scale Yields
| Fishing Level | Cooking Level | Scales/Hour | XP/Hour (Fishing) | XP/Hour (Cooking) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90 | 72 | ~1,200 | 21,300 | 16,000 |
| 97 | 99 | ~1,500 | 23,500 | 26,400 |
With Chef’s Delight boost (Cooking +8): Can achieve 8+ scales per eel at 99 Cooking.
AFK Strategy
Sacred eels are not actively AFK while fishing, but the process is very passive:
- Fish for 30-40 minutes at Zul-Andra (decent attention required to avoid depleting the spot)
- Store eels in bank or inventory for batch processing
- Dissect at bank when convenient (multiple eels at once)
- Repeat - total scales accumulate passively over weeks
Click frequency: Normal fishing clicks required, but dissecting can be done whenever convenient.
When You Need It
- Early: Skip sacred eels, focus on Zulrah boss kills for scales (easier)
- Mid-Game (88+ Fishing): Start sacred eel fishing to passively accumulate scales
- Late-Game: Combine with boss kills - eels for steady passive income, boss for peaks when needed
Cost-Benefit Analysis
| Method | Scales/Hour | XP Gain | Attention | Total Hours for 50k scales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sacred Eels (87+ Fishing) | 1,200-1,500 | Dual (Fishing + Cooking) | Low-Medium | 33-42 hours |
| Zulrah Boss | 220 avg/kill | None | High | 227+ kills (~200+ hours) |
Verdict: Sacred eels are far superior for passive scale generation. Zulrah boss kills become worthwhile only for unique drops or if you want scales faster (at the cost of attention/difficulty).
Cooking Integration
Fish from fishing provide raw food that scales with Cooking:
| Fish | Cooking Level | Cooking XP | Heals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trout | 15 | 30 | 20 |
| Salmon | 25 | 40 | 30 |
| Sturgeon | 48 | 60 | 40 |
| Monkfish | 62 | 60 | 16 |
| Karambwan | 65 | 80 | 18 |
| Anglerfish | 82 | 85 | 22 |
Pro tip: Cook fish immediately after catching. By 99 Fishing, you’ll naturally reach high Cooking levels without separate grind.
Common Mistakes
❌ Grinding fly fishing past 58 - Switch to Barbarian at 58 to start gaining Agility ❌ Skipping Tempoross entirely - Even with RNG, barrel saves ~40+ hours of clicking ❌ Using Monkfish instead of Karambwan - Karambwan is better food + decent XP ❌ Not banking Karambwans - You’ll need thousands for Slayer/PvM, cook them passively ❌ Ignoring Angler’s Outfit - +2.5% Fishing XP for life, worth 10-15 Tempoross games
FAQ
How long to 99 Fishing?
- Barbarian route (best Agility): 50-60 hours
- Karambwan route (best food): 60-80 hours
- AFK route: 90-120 hours
Can I skip Barbarian Fishing? Yes, but you lose free Agility XP. Go Fly fish → Karambwan instead (still good, just less efficient overall).
Is the Barrel grind worth it? For 100+ hours of Karambwan: Yes. You save 40+ hours of clicking. For shorter grinds: No, just deal with 1.5-min AFK.
When do I stop fishing? When you reach 99 or when you have enough food stockpiled (typically 500+ cooked Karambwans).
