OSRS Ironman Death's Coffer Guide (2026): Best Items by Stage
Sacrifice tradeable items worth 10,000+ GE for 105% of GE price in locked coffer credit. Ironmen get a 50% discount on reclaim fees (2.5% instead of 5%). Best items: Barrows dupes, Zulrah uniques, DK ring dupes, mature kegs (Moonlight mead kegs ~175k each), Cerberus boot dupes, and raid uniques. One raid dupe funds your coffer for years.
Death’s Coffer is the ironman’s secret weapon for funding item recovery. Unlike main accounts (who flip the GE for profit), ironmen have no way to sell unwanted tradeable drops. High Alchemy yields only 60-75% of GE value. Death’s Coffer pays 105% - a massive gap that grows with every dupe you earn.
How Death’s Coffer Works
Death’s Coffer is a chest inside Death’s Office. You can visit Death’s Office at any time through tombstone entrances around the map - the fastest way in is an amulet of glory teleport to Edgeville (10 tiles from the entrance).
Core mechanics:
- Sacrifice any tradeable item worth 10,000+ GP - receive 105% of its GE price as locked coffer credit
- Credit cannot be withdrawn, ever - only used for death fees and private instances
- Maximum coffer balance: 2,147,483,647 coins (integer limit)
- New items released after August 2024 are blacklisted until their GE price settles (prevents exploits)
Who can use it:
- Regular Ironmen ✅
- Hardcore Ironmen ✅
- Ultimate Ironmen ❌ (different death mechanic)
Payment priority: When you reclaim items, fees are deducted from your coffer first. If the balance is insufficient, the remainder comes from your bank.
Gravestone vs Death’s Office
This is the most important thing to understand about death costs. There are two fee tiers and they’re massively different.
Gravestone (first 15 minutes)
When you die, your items go to a gravestone at your death location. You have 15 minutes to run back and reclaim them. The timer pauses while logged out or idle for 10+ seconds.
Gravestone fees are cheap and capped:
| Item Value | Fee Per Item | Ironman Fee (50% off) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100k | Free | Free |
| 100k - 1M | 1,000 | 500 |
| 1M - 10M | 10,000 | 5,000 |
| 10M+ | 100,000 | 50,000 |
| Max total fee | 500,000 | ~250,000 |
Death’s Office (after 15 minutes)
If you don’t make it back in time, items transfer to Death’s Office automatically. They’re stored indefinitely but the fees jump dramatically:
- Mains: 5% of each item’s GE value
- Ironmen: 2.5% of each item’s GE value
The difference in practice: A late-game setup worth 500M costs ~125-250k to reclaim from the gravestone but ~12.5M from Death’s Office. Always try to get back to your gravestone.
Protect Item Prayer
Always use Protect Item (25 Prayer) during dangerous PvM. It lets you keep 4 items on death instead of 3. Since the kept item is typically your most valuable piece, this massively reduces reclaim fees. For example, keeping a scythe of vitur (~700M) on death saves you 17.5M in Death’s Office fees at the ironman rate.
The Alch vs Coffer Rule
Rule: If 105% of GE price > high alch value - coffer it
| Item | GE Price | Coffer Value | High Alch | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barrows piece (avg) | 1,000,000 | 1,050,000 | 120,000 | Coffer (+875%) |
| Ranger boots | 35,000,000 | 36,750,000 | 90,000 | Coffer (+40,733%) |
| Dragon boots | 250,000 | 262,500 | 60,000 | Coffer (+337%) |
| Rune platebody | 40,000 | 42,000 | 37,800 | Coffer (+11%) |
| Granite maul | 25,000 | 26,250 | 7,500 | Coffer (+250%) |
For ironmen, the coffer wins almost every time for items worth 10k+. The only exception is items where the high alch value somehow exceeds 105% of GE price - extremely rare, but happens when items crash and the GE guide price hasn’t caught up.
How Much to Keep
| Stage | Coffer Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early game (pre-70s) | 2-5M | Deaths are cheap, gear is cheap |
| Mid game (Slayer/bossing) | 10-20M | You’re wearing 10-50M in gear |
| Late game (raiding) | 30-50M | Raid gear pushes 100M+ setups |
| Endgame (tbow/scythe) | 50-100M | One bad death at Death’s Office costs 10M+ |
Quick formula: Take your most expensive wearable loadout, multiply by 0.025 (ironman 2.5% rate) = cost of one death at Death’s Office. Keep enough for 10-20 bad deaths.
Early Game: What to Sacrifice (Base 50s - Quest Cape)
Before Slayer and bossing dupes start flowing, these items fund your early coffer.
| Item | Source | Approx GE Value | Coffer Credit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moonlight mead(m) keg | Brewing (29 Cooking) | ~175k | ~184k | Best early coffer item - reliable, repeatable |
| Grand seed pod | Gnome Stronghold agility | ~25k | ~26k | Easy grab, zero effort |
| Chef’s delight(m) keg | Brewing (29 Cooking) | ~45k+ | ~47k | Good if farming with The Stuff |
| Asgarnian ale(m) glass | Brewing | ~23k | ~24k | Fine if you have extras |
| Bottomless compost bucket (extra) | Farming Guild chest | ~150k | ~157k | Only need one - sacrifice dupes |
| Clue scroll cosmetics | Treasure Trails | Varies | Varies | Gilded items, 3rd Age pieces (high value) |
The Trouble Brewing Method - Passive Coffer Cheese
This is the easiest way to farm Death’s Coffer early game. Minimal effort, zero GP investment, consistent passive income.
How it works:
-
Farm “The Stuff” - Play one Trouble Brewing game (~20 mins, very AFK)
- Deposit 100 buckets of water into the hopper
- Earn 100 Pieces of Eight
- Buy 2x “The Stuff” from Honest Jimmy (50 pieces each)
-
Brew Mature Ales - Set up at any brewing vat (Keldagrim, Port Phasmatys, Aldarin)
- Ingredients per batch: 2 water buckets, 2 barley malt, 4 main ingredients (e.g., Sulliuscep mushrooms for Moonlight Mead), 1 ale yeast, 1 The Stuff
- With The Stuff: 64% chance to mature (vs 5% without)
- Fermentation: 1-3 days (passive, just wait)
-
Sacrifice to Death’s Coffer - Feed mature batches straight to Death’s Office
- Mature Moonlight Mead: ~240k+ per batch to coffer
- Per Trouble Brewing game: 2 batches brewing = ~480k+ into coffer over time
The math: One 20-minute Trouble Brewing session funds multiple brewing batches that passively fill your coffer while you do other content. This is the best early-game passive coffer income with zero resource investment.
Trap: Dragon Bitter(m) Glass
Dragon bitter(m) glass is worth only ~715 GP - below the 10,000 minimum threshold. Don’t brew it for the coffer. This is the most common mature ale trap.
Mid Game: Dupes Start Flowing
This is where your coffer fills itself naturally through PvM.
Barrows Duplicates
After 100-200 Barrows runs, every piece has duplicates.
- Average piece value: 500k-2M - 525k-2.1M in coffer
- Priority: Keep one of each piece you actually need (Ahrim’s for magic DPS, Dharok’s for NMZ/training). Sacrifice everything else.
- Typical coffer gain: 100-200 runs = 50M-100M into coffer (if you sacrifice all non-essentials)
Zulrah Duplicates
After you have your blowpipe, magic fang, and serpentine helm, every Zulrah unique is a coffer deposit.
| Item | GE Price | Coffer Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Tanzanite fang | ~11M | ~11.5M |
| Serpentine visage | ~3.8M | ~4M |
| Magic fang | ~3.8M | ~4M |
| Uncut onyx | ~2.6M | ~2.7M |
Tanzanite fang dupes are the big ones at ~11.5M each. Most ironmen end up with multiple fang dupes over a Zulrah grind.
Vorkath Duplicates
Vorkath’s uniques are rare but valuable coffer items.
| Item | GE Price | Coffer Credit | Drop Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skeletal visage | ~17M | ~17.8M | 1/5,000 |
| Draconic visage | ~3.9M | ~4.1M | 1/5,000 |
| Dragonbone necklace | ~85k | ~89k | 1/1,000 |
After you’ve made your dragonfire ward, every visage dupe is a solid coffer deposit. Dragonbone necklaces are common enough that you’ll stack up multiples - they meet the 10k minimum.
Dagannoth Kings Ring Dupes
Farming all 3 DK kings produces inevitable ring dupes.
- Berserker ring / Archer ring: ~4M each - ~4.2M in coffer
- Seers ring: Lower value (~2-3M) - still worth sacrificing
- How long: Farming all 3 rings consistently for 100+ KC = guaranteed dupes
Hydra Organ Dupes (Alchemical Hydra, 95 Slayer)
Eye, Fang, Heart drop in order. After you have the Brimstone ring, subsequent organs are dupes.
- Value per organ: ~60k GE - ~63k coffer
- Not huge individually but adds up at high KC
Cerberus Boot Dupes (91 Slayer)
Primordial, Pegasian, Eternal boots - 25-45M each.
- Second pair of any: 26-47M in coffer
- Best mid-game coffer item outside Barrows
- Prioritize farming these once you hit 91 Slayer
God Wars Dungeon Armour Dupes
- Bandos pieces: 5-30M each
- Armadyl pieces: 5-30M each
- Once you have the set, dupes go straight to Death
Farming Seeds - Post-99 Contracts
For ironmen who continue Farming Contracts after 99, seed dupes become a steady coffer feeder.
- Dragonfruit tree seeds: ~175k each - ~184k in coffer
- Other tree seeds: Vary widely depending on rarity
- Not a primary source but a nice bonus for dedicated farmers
Late Game: Raid Dupes - Coffer for Life
Raid dupes fund your coffer forever. Even a single mid-tier unique dupe is years of death fees.
Chambers of Xeric Dupes
| Item | GE Price (approx) | Coffer Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Twisted bow | ~1.5B | ~1.575B |
| Dragon claws | ~70M | ~73.5M |
| Kodai insignia | ~60M | ~63M |
| Ancestral pieces (per piece) | ~30-80M | ~31.5-84M |
| Twisted buckler | ~30M | ~31.5M |
Theatre of Blood Dupes
| Item | GE Price (approx) | Coffer Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Scythe of vitur | ~700M | ~735M |
| Sanguinesti staff | ~500M | ~525M |
| Avernic defender hilt | ~75M | ~78.75M |
| Justiciar pieces (per piece) | ~5-10M | ~5.25-10.5M |
Tombs of Amascut Dupes
| Item | GE Price (approx) | Coffer Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Tumeken’s shadow | ~800M | ~840M |
| Masori pieces (per piece) | ~20-80M | ~21-84M |
| Elidinis’ ward | ~70M | ~73.5M |
| Osmumten’s fang | ~30M | ~31.5M |
By this stage, any boss unique dupe you don’t need goes straight to the coffer. Nightmare, Nex, and other endgame drops are worth tens to hundreds of millions each - you won’t need a table to tell you to sacrifice them.
Note: GE prices fluctuate. Values are approximate for illustration.
Niche Items Ironmen Often Miss
Short-list of underrated coffer items that accumulate naturally.
| Item | Source | Why You Have Extras |
|---|---|---|
| Bottomless compost bucket | Farming Guild chest (~1/20 drop rate) | Only need one - every extra is pure coffer value |
| Grand seed pod | Gnome Stronghold agility (rare reward) | No real use for ironmen beyond one in inventory |
| Clue scroll cosmetics | Treasure Trails (Gilded gear, 3rd Age pieces) | High GE value, zero ironman utility beyond collection log |
| DK pets | Dagannoth Kings (rare drop) | Duplicates can be sacrificed |
| Onyx bolt tips | Gem drops, Slayer loot | Often more than you’ll ever use for ammo |
Trap Items - Don’t Waste Your Time
Below the 10,000 GE Minimum
- Dragon bitter(m) glass (~715 GP) - most common mature ale trap
- Various stackable drops that sound valuable but are under 10k per unit
Untradeable Items (Ineligible Regardless)
These look like they should work but the coffer won’t accept them:
- Imbued rings (Berserker ring (i), Seers ring (i), Archer ring (i))
- Slayer helm (i)
- God capes (charged cape)
- Any item that’s been imbued at Nightmare Zone
- Tanzanite/Magma mutagens from Zulrah (untradeable cosmetics)
- Vorkath’s head (untradeable)
Blocked by Jagex
- Bonds - explicitly blocked
- Leagues/Deadman/Grid Master rewards - exploit prevention
- Recently released items (post-August 2024) - blacklisted until GE price settles
Items Where High Alch Actually Beats Coffer
Extremely rare. Check: if 105% of GE price < high alch value, alch it instead. This happens when items crash and the GE guide price hasn’t caught up.
Private Instances - When to Buy Them
Your coffer credit also pays for private boss room instances. Combat Achievements reduce GWD instance costs.
| Boss | Base Cost | With Hard CA | With Elite CA | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | 25,000 | - | - | Yes - no competition, safe spot freedom |
| Grotesque Guardians | 50,000 | - | - | Sometimes - if multi-combat is a problem |
| GWD bosses | 150,000 | 125,000 | 100,000 | Yes once you farm consistently |
| Corporeal Beast | 200,000 | - | - | Only if farming spirit shields |
| Nex | 100,000 | - | - | Yes - consistent dupes |
FAQ
What’s the best AFK way to fill my coffer early?
The Trouble Brewing method. One 20-minute game gets you “The Stuff” for 2 brewing batches. With The Stuff, you have a 64% chance of maturing each batch. Moonlight Mead kegs are worth ~175k each (~184k in coffer). Set up brews and collect passively while doing other content.
Should I always coffer boss dupes instead of alching?
Almost always yes. Boss uniques have high GE values but terrible alch values. A Barrows piece worth 1M GE gives 1.05M in the coffer vs ~120k from alching. The only exception is if the GE price has crashed well below the alch value, which is extremely rare for boss uniques.
How do gravestone fees compare to Death’s Office fees?
Gravestone fees are capped at ~250k total for ironmen regardless of gear value. Death’s Office charges 2.5% per item. A 500M setup costs ~125-250k at the gravestone but ~12.5M from Death’s Office. Always try to reclaim from your gravestone within 15 minutes.
